Why VHS tapes do not age the same way

VHS stores video as a magnetic signal on physical tape. Heat, humidity, contamination, repeated playback, mechanical damage, and the original recording quality can all influence how a tape behaves years later.

Signs a tape deserves attention

You do not need to wait for a tape to become unplayable before digitizing it. If the footage is important, preserving a digital copy while the tape still plays normally can reduce your dependence on aging playback hardware.

• Visible damage to the shell or tape path
• Unusual resistance, squealing, or playback problems
• Picture instability, dropouts, or worsening sound
• A musty odor or visible signs of contamination
• Family footage that exists on only one copy

Digitization is a preservation step, not a restoration promise

Converting VHS to MP4 captures the picture and sound the source tape can still provide. It makes the footage easier to copy and back up, but it does not magically recreate detail or content that has already been lost.

After digitizing, keep more than one copy

Once your videos are digital, store copies in more than one place whenever possible. A computer, external drive, and a separate backup location can protect against a single device failure.
